"Stars Just Wanna Have Fun"

(Click on slide to see full picture)

Brooklynne started this quilt during her 2017 Christmas vacation. We decided she was ready to up her game and learn how to do half square triangles. She sat next to me and I showed her multiple options in Electric Quilt. She got really excited when I showed her the Friendship Star so we set about choosing fabric swatches in EQ that were similar to fabrics in her stash. Once she declared "that's perfect" she set about digging through her stash totes and choosing the fabrics she felt were just right. She had about half the fabrics she needed so next she went "shopping" in Gammy's (me) stash and there is one fabric that made the cut from GeeMaw's (my mom) stash.

It was so much fun watching her sew her very first half square triangles. The only thing is I thought this would be a project that would last awhile...boy was I wrong! She sat down and got all her half square triangles knocked out in a couple of hours the very first night! The rest of the piecing went quickly as well and she did a lot of it at Girl Friday. Our friend Vicki Solf brought her portable design wall to Girl Friday so Brooklynne could have fun figuring out where all her wonderful stars were going to live in this quilt. She put the borders on during her Spring Break at Girl Friday.

The next thing, besides waiting for Gammy to quilt it, was it needed a name. My husband loves being involved in our quilting projects and one thing in particular he likes to do is come up with names for our quilts. He looks at the quilts and thinks on it for awhile and then "BAM" he has a couple ideas, I have a hard time naming them myself so this works out great! He came up with "Stars Just Wanna Have Fun" and he asked me if he thought she would like that name. I told him "If she doesn't use it I DEFINATELY will use it at some point!". Well, she LOVED it and came running to tell me how Paw Paw had thought of the most PERFECT name for her quilt!!

Brooklynne entered "Stars Just Wanna Have Fun" in the 2019 Plantation Quilting Guild Quilt Show and won first place. She told me she felt so much better about the blue ribbon it won because this time she wasn't the only entry in the Junior Category. She'll be entering it in the 2020 Lakeview Quilt Guild Quilt Show.
